Federal Investment Boosts Rural Rail Development

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded over $53 million to MaineDOT to support essential rural rail upgrades. This funding focuses on rail lines passing through Penobscot, Aroostook, Washington, and Piscataquis counties. Part of the investment will go towards rehabilitating tracks and building stronger connections to Millinocket’s One North Bio-Industrial Park.

In a recent press release, U.S. Senator Susan Collins highlighted the importance of this federal funding. The award comes from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Fiscal Year 2024 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program, underscoring the government’s commitment to Maine’s rural economy. As a collaborative project, One North and Eastern Maine Railway will provide a 20 percent match, bringing the total investment to just over $66.6 million.

MaineDOT Secures Funding to Support Local Industries

The improvements span 140 miles of rail, prioritizing safety, speed, and reliability for better rail performance. Plans include installing 86,000 new crossties and laying more than 108,000 tons of ballast to support these upgrades. The project will also include equipment defect detectors and upgrades for seven highway grade crossings, enhancing infrastructure for safer and more efficient operations.

Senator Collins emphasized that these enhancements will strengthen economic opportunities in Maine, improving market access and supporting local employment. By increasing the reliability of freight rail, rural communities will benefit from greater connections to national and global markets. Maine’s forest products industry, a major economic contributor, is among the sectors expected to benefit from this development.

The grant also supports new, sustainable industries in the Katahdin region, promoting a modern infrastructure that meets Maine’s evolving needs. With these updates, local businesses, especially within One North Bio-Industrial Park, will have improved rail access for product distribution. These rail developments represent a significant step in Maine’s commitment to connecting rural areas to broader markets.

Long-Term Benefits for Rural Communities

This federal investment marks a strategic step toward strengthening Maine’s transportation infrastructure. By modernizing its rail network, MaineDOT positions the state to participate actively in national and global markets, fostering economic growth. This project will ensure that rural industries have the infrastructure needed for sustained growth, supporting Maine’s economic vitality.

The grant funding reflects a broader plan for developing Maine’s transportation networks, aiming to build resilience and connectivity for rural communities. Local industries, particularly those rooted in sustainable practices, will benefit from these modernized railways. The rural rail upgrades provided through this investment will create a foundation for long-term prosperity and regional development, reinforcing Maine’s role in national supply chains.
