Maersk carefully monitors compliance with sanctions against the Russian Federation
30.03.2022
A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S (Maersk) has stopped operations through all ports of the Russian Federation and carefully checks the legality of shipments through third countries, in particular China.
This was reported to Rail.insider by the press service of the global container transportation operator, informs Railway Supply magazine.
Here are the answers of a senior employee of the press service of A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S Concepción Boo Arias to Rail.insider questions.
Can Russian cargo be transported via Maersk lines through the ports of the Far East of the Russian Federation (Vladivostok)?
No. Due to direct and indirect sanctions against Russia, back in early March, Maersk suspended all new bookings to or from Russia. We are transporting existing bookings as much as possible in terms of sanctions, but expeditiously.
Do you know about the circumvention of sanctions with the re-registration of Russian goods to Chinese companies? Is it legal? What is being done to prevent the transportation of military cargo to Russia in this way?
We review all of our orders and shipments to make sure our trade is legal. Maersk does not permit the transport of military supplies to or from Russia.
Do you think it is possible to use the scheme of transporting Russian cargo bypassing the sanctions through the ports of China and Iran?
See the answer to the previous question. As for Iran, as a result of sanctions against the country, Maersk stopped operations there back in 2018.
As previously reported, one of the Russian social networks calls for the re-registration of goods to Chinese companies in order to circumvent European sanctions, including those allegedly from Maersk.
Meanwhile, due to sanctions, the logistics of Russian manufacturers is reoriented to the Eastern direction, with the ensuing significant increase in the cost of transportation due to the multiple increase in distances and the increase in tariffs of Russian Railways.
