CAF secures another milestone contract with Madrid Metro to expand its rolling stock capacity. The deal reinforces Madrid Metro’s strategy to modernize public transport services in the capital. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Madrid Metro’s Historic Line 1 Benefits from New Fleet

The contract entails the design and production of 40 narrow-gauge trains to serve Line 1. This historical line, inaugurated in 1919, connects Pinar de Chamartín and Valdecarros stations across the metro network. In addition, CAF will implement a comprehensive program to extend the operational life cycle of these new trains. The deal also allows for potential future expansions in the number of trains to be supplied under similar conditions.

Each new train will consist of six interconnected cars designed for seamless passenger movement. This innovative layout ensures high capacity and enhances the commuting experience for passengers traveling throughout Madrid. Moreover, the trains will feature state-of-the-art technologies for safety, performance, and comfort. Energy efficiency remains a key priority, aligning with broader environmental policies enacted in the city.

This contract follows another major agreement between CAF and Madrid Metro finalized last June. That earlier deal involved supplying 40 wide-gauge trains, further solidifying CAF’s role as a trusted partner. The financing for these acquisitions is supported by loans from the European Investment Bank, reflecting strong institutional backing.

Increased passenger demand and evolving environmental priorities are driving the need for modernized trains in Madrid. The Community of Madrid’s policies emphasize sustainability, which is evident in their push for energy-efficient and technologically advanced metro units.

Modern Technology Enhances Madrid Metro Passenger Experience

CAF’s latest trains are designed to meet rigorous technical standards, including energy consumption and lifecycle costs. Notably, these units can operate semi-automatically at GoA2 automation levels. Over time, the trains could transition to GoA3 automation, which allows operation without a driver while maintaining onboard supervision.

The collaboration between CAF and Metro de Madrid spans decades, with CAF supplying over 600 units since their partnership began. Series such as 2000, 3000, 5000, and 8000 have been instrumental in shaping Madrid’s metro infrastructure. The most recent deliveries—s/8400 units—remain operational on Line 6, highlighting CAF’s enduring impact on the network.

CAF’s expertise and consistent delivery of innovative solutions ensure it remains at the forefront of Madrid Metro’s modernization journey. With each new project, the company demonstrates its commitment to enhancing urban mobility and sustainability in Spain’s capital city.
