Hitachi Rail installed all trains, signaling systems, and power supply for the new line. The M4 metro line connects the southwestern districts of Milan with the San Cristoforo railway hub. This project greatly enhances the city’s transportation accessibility.

Autonomous trains and Hitachi Rail technologies

Hitachi Rail provided 47 autonomous trains for the new metro line. The CBTC-based signaling system ensures the reliability of train operations. This technology plays an essential role in passenger safety.

Train speed and capacity

The trains can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h, and during peak hours, intervals are reduced to 75 seconds. The line can carry up to 24,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

The new metro line will help Milan avoid over 4 million car trips annually. This reduction in car use will decrease CO2 emissions by 10,310 tons and particulate matter by 1,511 kilograms.

Hitachi Rail emphasizes that this project marks a significant step toward collective mobility in Milan. The completion of the M4 line helps shift the city’s transportation system toward more sustainable and eco-friendly solutions.
