London’s Tube Brings Art to Stratford and Waterloo Stations

Commuters often pass time on the Tube by listening to music, reading, or people-watching. However, Art on the Underground introduces creative distractions, making stations visually and sonically engaging for travelers. Since launching in 2000, the program has commissioned artists to enhance transit spaces.

Notable past projects include lenticular shapes at Tottenham Court Road and labyrinth designs at 272 stations. Now, four new artworks have been announced, set for unveiling throughout the year. These projects will continue the initiative’s 25-year legacy of transforming public transportation.

Stratford Underground Station will soon display a large-scale work by conceptual artist Ahmet Öğüt. Titled Saved by the Whale’s Tail, Saved by Art, the piece references a dramatic 2020 incident in Rotterdam. A Metro train overran its stop, nearly plunging into a canal before a whale-tail sculpture caught it.

The public will participate by sharing personal stories of how art impacted or even saved lives. The most compelling submission will receive a trophy-like sculpture, adding an interactive element. The installation will officially launch in March, bringing thought-provoking engagement to the station.

Waterloo Station will host a unique soundscape by Turner Prize nominee and composer Rory Pilgrim. Collaborating with Community Spaces at Risk, he supports cultural venues facing sustainability challenges. The soundscape will play through station speakers for two weeks in July.

Passengers moving along the walkway between Jubilee and Northern lines will experience Pilgrim’s immersive composition. The project aims to highlight the importance of preserving artistic and community spaces in London. This initiative blends music with public awareness, reinforcing Waterloo’s role as a cultural hub.

Brixton Joins London’s Tube Art Initiative with a New Installation

Brixton Station will introduce a striking artwork by visual artist Ruby Loewe, known for storytelling through African and Caribbean folklore. Her piece addresses the British government’s suppression of Black resistance movements during the 1960s and ’70s.

Loewe becomes the ninth artist commissioned to respond to Brixton’s 1980s-era murals. Her work will be installed in November, adding historical and cultural depth to the station. This project continues Brixton’s tradition of reflecting local heritage through impactful public art.

The fourth installation for 2025 will be the 41st Pocket Tube Map, designed by 94-year-old artist Agnes Denes. She reimagines her 1980 work Map Projections, which turned maps of Earth into mathematical forms.

The new edition will feature an “electrified” interpretation of her previous cartographic concepts. These innovative maps will be released in spring, offering a fresh perspective on spatial representation. The project reaffirms London’s commitment to blending transit with contemporary artistic expression.

With these installations, Art on the Underground continues redefining public spaces through creativity and engagement. Commuters can expect visually and sonically enriching experiences across multiple stations in 2025.
