Locomotive Hybrid Project Enters Yard Testing Phase
31.05.2025
Union Pacific’s latest innovation, a hybrid locomotive developed with ZTR, has moved from shop trials to yard service testing as part of its ongoing pilot program set to finish in 2026. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Initial evaluations took place at the Jenks Locomotive Shop in North Little Rock, where the prototype system demonstrated strong proof of concept. The project now progresses into active railroad operations.

The first hybrid unit, combining battery-powered UPY 409 and diesel-powered UPY 309, was introduced in April 2024. This marks the beginning of a broader initiative to deploy six such systems using ZTR’s energy control technology.
Each hybrid locomotive undergoes conversion from older models at Union Pacific’s Arkansas facility. The battery component supports plug-in charging or draws energy directly from the paired diesel engine, allowing efficient switching between power sources.
Union Pacific estimates the dual-power configuration can reduce fuel usage by as much as 80%. That improvement directly translates into lower emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
Locomotive Technology Designed for Sustainability Goals
With environmental regulations tightening, Union Pacific sees hybrid switchers as a key tool in cutting carbon output and improving air quality in yard operations.
The use of converted older models also allows the company to minimize waste and control upgrade costs while implementing sustainable rail solutions.
Locomotive Pilot Continues with New Test Set in 2025
A second hybrid set will enter field testing in 2025, expanding the program’s reach. The railroad also shared a short video highlighting the system’s capabilities and environmental impact.
This project showcases how strategic technology upgrades can align with emissions goals while keeping operational efficiency high.
