04.07.2025
LNER driver Mick Ingledew has ended a 46-year career with a farewell run from Newcastle to London, closing a legacy defined by dedication and passion for the railway. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Back in 1979, Mick joined British Rail after a friend’s father suggested a career on the tracks. He applied, interviewed at Newcastle Central Station, and secured a position that would span nearly five decades.

He began operating the powerful Deltic locomotives, which remained his favorites, and later drove modern Azuma trains across the LNER network. His routes included major destinations such as Edinburgh, Leeds, and Inverness.
LNER driver reflects on decades of railway innovation
Mick witnessed vast changes in the industry—from British Rail to privatization under GNER, and finally to LNER’s digital transformation. Every phase offered challenges and rewards, he recalled with pride.
He briefly moved into driver management in 1989 but returned to the cab ten years ago. The warm welcome he received reminded him of the strong bond among rail workers.
On July 3, Mick took the controls for the final time, departing Newcastle with his daughter and son aboard. He returned on the 14:30 service from London to a heartfelt reception.
Legacy of the LNER driver extends beyond the route
Few drivers are authorized to operate the full LNER route, including diversion lines. Mick’s rare qualification took him from King’s Cross to the Scottish Highlands and made him a go-to expert.
Rachel Hardy, his manager, praised his mentorship and legendary knowledge. “He supported me from day one and inspired countless others,” she said.
Mick says pride shaped every shift—polished shoes, a pressed uniform, and full focus on performance. “Train driving gave me purpose and unforgettable views. I’d recommend this career to anyone,” he said.
As he steps into retirement, the name Mick Ingledew joins the ranks of British railway icons, remembered for professionalism, passion, and 46 years at the helm.
