Leicester has relaunched its £22 million railway station upgrade after the original tender drew only one bid, aiming to attract broader interest with early contractor involvement and refined design plans
Project includes relocating main entrance from London Road to Station Street

City officials changed the procurement model following the failure of last year’s two-stage design and build process, which failed to gain traction among contractors. Leicester City Council now seeks more competitive participation.

With nearly £18 million in levelling up funding, the scheme will revamp Leicester’s Grade II listed Victorian station. The scope includes structural work, telecom and M&E upgrades, interior renovations, and public realm improvements.

Planned enhancements follow Network Rail standards and feature major layout changes. The entrance will move from London Road to Station Street, where a new public plaza with trees and rain gardens will open.

Designers will also uncover the original station façade, blending heritage with accessibility. These elements aim to create a more welcoming experience for passengers and visitors to Leicester.

Leicester Seeks Broader Contractor Interest

By involving contractors early, the council plans to minimize risks and foster collaboration. Officials believe this approach will result in more competitive bids and smoother project execution.

The new tender invitation will be issued by 29 July. If awarded on time, construction will begin no later than 30 April 2026 and conclude in October 2028.

Leicester’s Revamp Supports Broader Urban Growth

This railway project supports wider regeneration efforts in Leicester. The revamped station is expected to boost transport links, improve safety, and reflect the city’s long-term growth strategy.

Modern infrastructure, historical preservation, and green design combine to make this a landmark transformation for Leicester’s transport network.
