Lagos has expanded its urban rail network by adding new coaches to the Blue Line project, aiming to improve capacity, reliability, and travel time across one of its busiest transit corridors. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inspected the freshly delivered rolling stock on Sunday at the National Theatre Train Terminal, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to modernizing public transportation in Lagos.

New Coaches to Boost Capacity and Cut Commute Time in Lagos
The additional coaches will double the carrying capacity on the Blue Line, easing daily congestion and improving service frequency. According to the governor, passengers can expect faster trips and a more reliable rail schedule.
The Blue Line runs from Marina on Lagos Island to Okokomaiko, passing major districts like Mile 2. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) oversees the project, which supports Lagos’s broader infrastructure agenda.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that this upgrade aligns with the THEMES Plus Agenda, targeting enhanced mobility through efficient, comfortable, and affordable transport solutions. He said the new trains would directly reduce pressure on road traffic.
Lagos Positions Rail Expansion at the Core of Transit Reform
Improved train turnaround times and better passenger flow are central goals of the expansion. With more rolling stock in place, Lagos can serve a growing number of commuters while promoting a shift from cars to rail.
This development reflects Lagos’s strategy to become a model for modern urban mobility in Africa. And as demand rises, investments like this ensure the city’s infrastructure evolves in step with its population.
By expanding the Blue Line and upgrading rail services, Lagos continues its push toward a faster, safer, and smarter transportation system for all residents.
