Körfezray Metro Line boosts Kocaeli’s transport future

Körfezray Metro Line started its first tunnel excavations, the first for Kocaeli’s transportation system and opening the way toward sustainable, state-of-the-art mobility for the benefit of the industry, logistics, and city residents.

Strategic role of the Körfezray Metro Line
The 28.5-km line will consist of 18 stations from Körfez to Derince, İzmit, and Kartepe. The line will have 80 km/h running and will initially accommodate 300,000 opening-level daily passengers and half a million commuters in the long run.

Tram, rail, and sea link integration points will allow seamless connections across Kocaeli. In that way, the project offers not only a mobility upgrade but also an economic and cultural boost.
Timeline and infrastructure expansion
The first 10 kilometers of construction of 14 stations will be completed by 2028, and commercial use of the entire line by 2029. The tunnel excavations, however, ought to be completed by 2027.
The project will integrate with Kocaeli’s existing tram lines and extend the urban rail system from 17.3 kilometers to more than 60 kilometers. The ultimate goal is to extend the system as far as Cengiz Topel Airport.
Kocaeli’s growing transportation network
Kocaeli has already seen intensive infrastructure investment, including the high-speed railroad from Ankara–Istanbul to new highways and-port links. Accelerating industrial and population growth, nonetheless, calls for more rail solutions to ease congestion and expedite export.
The officials underline that linking the subway to the Marmaray line and providing a route connecting to Sabiha Gökçen Airport will make it an important corridor. Therefore, the Körfezray project will enhance regional connectivity and support the logistical hub of Türkiye.
