Kontron to Build GSM‑R Network on Spanish Railway

Kontron will launch the construction of a GSM‑R radio communication network on a railway in Spain. Adif, the national railway infrastructure operator, signed a contract worth over €20 million with Kontron Transportation Spain. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Kontron to modernize key railway route
Kontron will equip the Medina del Campo – Ourense line with a GSM‑R system. The 338-kilometer stretch runs through northwestern Spain and supports both regional passenger and freight traffic.

The new GSM‑R technology will significantly enhance operational safety, increase line capacity, and improve transport service quality. This investment in digital infrastructure marks an important milestone in railway modernization.
Additional investment to support Kontron’s project
Adif plans to invest another €30 million in upgrading the line’s telecommunications system. The project includes installing a new 96-core fiber optic cable alongside the existing 64-core cable. A new power supply system will also be deployed to support railway automation and GSM‑R equipment.
Kontron continues to expand its influence in the railway technology sector by delivering efficient and secure communication systems. Both projects are co-financed by the European Union, emphasizing their strategic importance for regional development.
As a result, building the GSM‑R network and upgrading telecom infrastructure will significantly improve rail service quality and safety in Spain.
