03.05.2025
The long-awaited KL–Bangkok Direct Train will soon return, as Malaysia and Thailand prepare to relaunch the cross-border service using existing railway infrastructure. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook confirmed that both nations are working to revive the KL–Bangkok Direct Train this year. The route will link Kuala Lumpur, Butterworth, Padang Besar, and Bangkok.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) have three months to finalize preparations. The initiative requires joint planning, marketing coordination, and integrated ticketing systems, not new tracks.
During a one-day working visit to Bangkok, Loke met with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit. He also toured the Bang Sue Central Terminal and reviewed Thailand’s high-speed rail system.
KL–Bangkok Direct Train Promises Economic and Travel Boost
The revival of the KL–Bangkok Direct Train is expected to enhance tourism and trade. Travelers will benefit from a seamless rail journey across Malaysia and Thailand without the need for multiple transfers.
Officials believe this collaboration could significantly improve mobility and economic activity between the two countries. Regional travelers and businesses stand to gain from the restored railway connection.
Extension to Border Towns Proposed Alongside KL–Bangkok Route
Thai authorities proposed expanding rail services from Sungai Golok to Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas in Malaysia. Loke welcomed the idea, citing its potential to uplift communities in the border region.
However, restoring these older tracks will take time. “Track rehabilitation is necessary before service can resume,” Loke explained. The disused lines require upgrades to meet current operational standards.
Malaysia and Thailand aim to enhance cross-border infrastructure and regional integration. The KL–Bangkok Direct Train, once revived, could symbolize renewed momentum in Southeast Asia’s transport development.
