Keolis Commuter Services Seeks Partner to Lease Battery Trains
13.06.2025
Keolis Commuter Services has issued a request for proposals to find a partner that will finance and lease new battery-electric trainsets for MBTA’s Fairmount Line. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The company plans to introduce these modern trains by 2028 as part of its efforts to support a cleaner and more efficient rail network in Boston. This initiative aligns with state environmental goals and urban mobility improvements.

Keolis Commuter Services Expands Battery Train Procurement
Earlier this year, Keolis Commuter Services also released a separate RFP for the design, manufacturing, and testing of the same battery-electric units. That process remains ongoing.
By pursuing financing and technical contracts in parallel, Keolis aims to streamline procurement and avoid project delays. Final agreements with manufacturers are expected by the end of 2025.
The financial partner selected through this new RFP will purchase the trainsets and lease them to Keolis under a long-term contract structure. This model supports capital efficiency while expediting delivery.
Keolis Commuter Services Targets 2028 Launch for Fairmount BEMUs
The Fairmount Line was chosen due to its short route and dense urban environment, which makes it ideal for battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs). This corridor could serve as a blueprint for similar upgrades across the MBTA network.
Proposals are due in August. Interested parties can request more information by contacting the company at rsprocurement@keoliscs.com. Stakeholders are encouraged to act promptly to join this major electrification initiative.
By modernizing its commuter fleet and adopting battery-powered trains, Keolis helps move Boston toward quieter, greener, and more reliable transit options.
