On April 14, 2025, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi met with UK officials, including UK High Commissioner Neil Wigan and representatives from UK Export Finance (UKEF), to explore financial arrangements for the Nairobi Central Station. Financing and Key Developments for Nairobi Railway City
The Nairobi Railway City project, covering 425 acres in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), is set to revolutionize the city’s transit system. Much of the land is owned by Kenya Railways and government entities.
The development will feature non-motorized transport corridors, which will provide accessible routes for pedestrians, who make up a large portion of Nairobi’s residents.
The Railway City will include an expanded Central Station, new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, and improved matatu termini to ensure efficient transit for Nairobians.
Mudavadi also confirmed that discussions on fast-tracking BRT Line 3 and Commuter Rail Lines 2 and 5 are ongoing, with the goal of unveiling these projects during the next GoK/G7+ Transport Heads of Mission meeting.
Nairobi Railway City as a Catalyst for Urban Development
The new Nairobi Central Station will be the centerpiece of the Railway City, serving as an iconic transport hub for Nairobi. The station will blend modern design with the heritage of existing stations, offering expanded capacity to support the growing commuter network.
It will also provide seamless interconnectivity with the city’s transport network, including BRT and non-motorized transport corridors.
The Nairobi Railway City project is designed to create a safe, efficient, and secure environment for commuters while positioning Nairobi as a leader in sustainable urban transportation. As the project progresses, it will play a key role in transforming the city’s transport landscape.
