More than $2 million was distributed through the KIASI program, which funds construction, rehabilitation, and engineering work for rail facilities with 50/50 matching grants. It designates $7.5 million annually to support rail access and industry needs.
The KRCI program awarded $1.6 million, covering up to 80% of project costs. It supports installation of warning lights, signals, and raised curb medians with reflectors to reduce collision risks at public crossings.
Kentucky Strengthens Infrastructure with Targeted Programs
Governor Andy Beshear stated the importance of prioritizing rail crossing safety alongside roads and bridges. He emphasized that the state must protect the everyday routes used by school buses, emergency services, and families.
KYTC Secretary Jim Gray added that these upgrades help safeguard drivers and enhance community connections. Strengthened rail infrastructure also supports job creation and business operations across Kentucky.
The projects improve operational efficiency and safety, while increasing the capacity of the statewide rail network. These developments align with the state’s strategy to promote long-term growth through infrastructure investment.
By combining safety improvements with strategic funding, Kentucky reinforces its commitment to building a resilient and modern rail system. The initiative reflects a broader goal of boosting economic competitiveness while protecting the public.
