Jharkhand Districts to Gain Rail Connectivity After 75 Years
19.01.2025
Four districts in Jharkhand will achieve rail connectivity for the first time since independence. This project marks a significant milestone in regional infrastructure development. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Rail Connectivity Brings Development to Underserved Jharkhand Districts
Four districts in Jharkhand—Gumla, Khunti, Simdega, and Chatra—are set to receive rail connectivity, ending a 75-year wait. The project aims to boost local economic growth and provide better transportation options for residents.

According to officials, Gumla, Khunti, and Simdega will connect to the Ranchi-Lohardaga rail line, while Chatra will link with the Ranchi-Hazaribagh route.
Rail Connectivity Project Details and Economic Implications
The Jharkhand Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (JRIDCL) completed surveys for the project. The plan proposes 55 km from Lohardaga to Gumla, 43 km from Gumla to Simdega, 20 km from Hatia to Khunti, and 42 km from Hazaribagh to Chatra. These additions will enhance economic opportunities, particularly for industries like agriculture and mining.
The Union Cabinet approved three railway projects worth ₹6,500 crore in August 2024. The projects include two new lines and one multi-tracking initiative across seven districts in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal. These projects aim to reduce regional disparities while bolstering Indian Railways’ network.
Officials noted that the new railway lines align with broader development goals. Improved connectivity reduces logistical barriers, enhances trade opportunities, and improves access to education and healthcare for underserved populations.
This rail connectivity project symbolizes Jharkhand’s growing role in India’s economic landscape. The initiative bridges gaps between rural and urban areas, offering long-term benefits for residents and businesses alike.
