18.04.2025
Japan will send two high-speed Shinkansen trains, models E5 and E3, to India for testing the new Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail line. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

According to The Japan Times, the trains are expected to arrive in early 2026. Before shipment, Japanese engineers will upgrade the trains with monitoring and climate control systems.

This equipment will help record technical data in conditions of heat and dust, typical for western India. The results will support the adaptation of infrastructure to the local environment.
Shinkansen Testing in India to Begin in 2026
The E3 model has been operating in Japan since 1997 and reaches speeds of up to 275 km/h. Japan plans to replace these with the new E10 series by the 2030s.
The E5 series entered service in 2011 and can reach speeds of 320 km/h. These trains are known for their advanced comfort and suitability for long-distance travel.
India originally intended to purchase E5 trains for its first high-speed corridor but failed to reach an agreement with the supplier. As a result, the country began developing its own high-speed trains.
Shinkansen Strengthens Japan–India Partnership
The transfer of Shinkansen trains marks a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation. Japan continues to play a key role in international infrastructure initiatives.
Technology sharing will accelerate the implementation of India’s high-speed rail project and allow Indian engineers to study Japan’s experience in high-speed transport.
Tokyo and New Delhi continue to strengthen ties as demand for modern transportation solutions grows across Asia.
