On September 11, 2024, a ceremony was held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, marking the start of construction of the first phase of the new East-West metro line, as reported by the railway news portal Railway Supply.

This project is a key part of the city’s transportation infrastructure development.

The first phase will stretch 24.5 km, including 21 stations, of which eight will be underground and 13 will be above ground.

One of the stations will serve as a transfer point, connecting with the existing North-South line.

The project is funded by a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which provided 140.7 billion yen, approximately equal to one billion US dollars.

The construction work is expected to be completed by 2031. This line will connect the western districts of the capital with the suburb of Bekasi, with a travel time of about 45 minutes from end to end.

It is projected that around 285,000 passengers will use the line daily. Once all sections are completed, the total length of the East-West line will reach 84.1 km.

Currently, Jakarta already has the North-South line, which is 15.7 km long and opened in March 2019.

It includes 13 stations and is equipped with a radio-based train control system (CBTC).

Six-car trains, manufactured by the Japanese corporation Sumitomo, operate on the line. The travel time between the terminal stations is about 30 minutes.

Construction of the second phase of the North-South line is underway, adding another 5.8 km, with completion scheduled for 2029.

A third section of 5.2 km is also planned in the future, which will significantly improve transport links in the metropolis.
