Italy Implements Earthquake Early Warning System on High-Speed Rail
21.07.2025
Italy has launched an advanced Earthquake Early Warning System on the Rome-Naples high-speed line to enhance rail safety and protect passengers during seismic events with real-time data and AI technology. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The project combines innovation with international expertise. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana worked with the University of Naples Federico II and Japan’s Railway Technical Research Institute to create a solution for earthquake-prone regions in Italy.

The system uses accelerometers to detect P-waves before destructive tremors. These sensors, placed along the line, send data instantly through a fiber-optic network to analyze risk and respond within seconds.

If seismic readings exceed safety thresholds, intelligent software activates signals to slow or stop trains. After the event, RFI teams verify conditions and restore service through a secure control platform.
Italy Expands Seismic Safety Across Rail Network
The EEWS proved its effectiveness soon after activation on May 3, 2025, when a magnitude 4.4 earthquake triggered an automatic stop of trains. This successful response demonstrated the system’s reliability under real conditions.
Plans include extending the technology to other high-speed and conventional lines equipped with ERTMS. These measures will strengthen Italy’s rail network, especially in areas facing frequent seismic threats.
Italy Sets Global Benchmark for Rail Safety
The Rome-Naples project highlights how advanced sensors, AI analytics, and international cooperation can safeguard critical infrastructure. This innovation positions Italy as a model for other nations facing similar challenges.
Future upgrades aim to improve resilience and passenger security across the entire rail system. By integrating technology and expertise, Italy shows how modern railways can adapt to natural hazards effectively.
