Irish Rail boosts delivery speed and freight volumes

The company anticipates stable growth in demand for rail freight over the coming years. To meet this demand, it is strengthening its transport capacity in advance.

The new wagons will be produced at WH Davis’s facility in Nottinghamshire. They will reach speeds of up to 110 km/h, 30 km/h faster than the current fleet.

Irish Rail prioritizes efficiency and modern technology

Each wagon will weigh between 17 and 20 tonnes and carry between 62 and 65 tonnes. That’s about one-third more than the operator’s current capacity.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with wagons entering service by 2027. If the option is exercised, the total order will reach 400 units.

The project reflects the operator’s long-term development strategy and commitment to maintaining competitiveness. The company is investing in reliability and innovation to meet changing market demands.
