Innovative Auto-Coupling Tested in France While in Motion

France has successfully tested auto-coupling technology that automatically connects and disconnects railcars while moving at speeds of up to 120 km/h. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The startup DirectTrainS conducted the trials using two 22.5-ton bogies. The solution is aimed at optimizing logistics without the need to upgrade existing infrastructure.

During the demonstration, engineers tested coupling stability with a cardboard cup of water placed on the bogie. The water remained still during connection, proving the smoothness of the process.
However, the video shows one railcar was stationary, and decoupling occurred at low speed. These conditions do not fully reflect operational reality.
Auto-coupling Without Infrastructure Modifications
The next phase will involve field trials on main lines in cooperation with freight operators and logistics companies. The auto-coupling system is designed to function without altering signaling or regulatory frameworks.
Engineers believe it can be integrated without hardware replacements, making the technology suitable for international deployment.
Auto-coupling for Passenger and Freight Transport
The solution is expected to be used in both light freight trains and passenger services. The versatility of the technology will accelerate train formation and operations.
Additionally, it is expected to reduce time and operational costs while increasing transport flexibility and safety.
If successfully implemented, the system could transform logistics strategies and boost rail transport efficiency.
