Indian Railways to Merge with Konkan Railway under Maharashtra’s Approval
24.05.2025
The Maharashtra government has approved the merger of Konkan Railway with Indian Railways, requesting Rs 396.54 crore in reimbursement and preservation of the name “Konkan Railway” as key conditions. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
In a letter to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed the state’s support, highlighting two non-negotiable requirements. First, Indian Railways must repay Maharashtra’s share of Rs 396.54 crore. Second, the name “Konkan Railway” must remain unchanged to reflect its regional legacy.

This decision marks the final shareholder endorsement for the merger, clearing the way for Indian Railways to fully integrate Konkan operations. The move comes ahead of local elections in the Konkan region, where public demand for consolidation has grown steadily.
Indian Railways Gains Final Backing for Strategic Merger
Established in the 1990s, Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) was designed to overcome the Western Ghats’ rugged terrain. The 741-kilometer route connects Roha in Maharashtra with Mangalore in Kerala, enhancing both regional access and national logistics.
Indian Railways already operates several services on the route. Now, with full ownership pending, the integration is expected to improve coordination, efficiency, and investment planning across zones.
Indian Railways to Preserve Konkan Identity Post-Merger
KRCL began as a joint venture between the Indian government and four states: Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. The original equity distribution included the Centre (51%), Maharashtra (22%), Karnataka (15%), and the remaining shared equally.
Headquartered in Navi Mumbai, KRCL has become a vital link in India’s transportation network. The last adjustment to its capital structure occurred in 2011. With Maharashtra’s approval secured, Indian Railways must now act swiftly to meet financial and branding obligations.
This move represents a major step toward unifying railway governance while maintaining strong regional identity.
