India Unveils 9000 HP Green Freight Locomotive Project
29.05.2025
India has launched its first 9000 HP electric freight locomotive, marking a major step in its sustainable transport strategy and reinforcing the country’s commitment to reducing emissions through green rail development. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This initiative, centered in Gujarat, is a joint effort between Indian Railways and Siemens Mobility. It aims to modernize freight logistics and shift cargo movement from roads to the railways.

India Invests in High-Powered Green Rail Technology
The newly built Dahod facility will manufacture 1,200 locomotives over 11 years. It was completed in under two years and represents a major milestone in India’s infrastructure modernization.
Each D9 locomotive delivers 9000 horsepower, reaches speeds of up to 120 km/h, and hauls 5,800 tonnes. These specifications are tailored to boost freight efficiency and rail capacity.
The project also reflects the ‘Make in India’ policy, with about 90% of components sourced locally. This strengthens the domestic supply chain and supports regional job creation.
India Boosts Logistics with Sustainable Rail Solutions
Siemens will maintain the locomotives for 35 years using its Railigent X platform. This ensures predictive maintenance, fewer breakdowns, and consistent performance across the network.
The locomotives include the Kavach safety system and green propulsion features. These technologies promote safety, minimize carbon impact, and contribute to eco-friendly logistics.
India plans to raise rail’s freight share from 27% to 45%. Doing so will reduce road congestion, cut emissions, and make transport more reliable and efficient nationwide.
Transforming Dahod from a steam engine site to a cutting-edge plant highlights the country’s path toward innovation and environmental responsibility in transportation.
