The Budapest Public Transport Authority, BKK, has applied for a grant of 10 billion Hungarian forints (26.7 million euros) from the EU’s funding program for 2021–2027 under the Development Plus Operational Program (IKOP Plusz) to expand metro and tram lines in Budapest, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These expansion projects, presented under IKOP Plusz, are included in the Budapest Mobility Plan.

The expansion projects are the first stage of Budapest’s public transport development, as BKK plans to submit another grant application for further projects and measures aimed at achieving the transportation and urban development goals outlined in the Budapest Mobility Plan.

BKK will provide a detailed report on implementation and planning schedules, public consultation processes, and the planned technical design of projects in the upcoming period.

The development of metro and tram systems in Budapest is part of the authorities’ plan to expand and improve public transport throughout the city, particularly between suburban areas and the city center.

Thus, direct and convenient connections may be created to develop a sustainable and fast transportation system with zero emissions.
