Illinois Approves $3.1M Rail Safety Upgrades Across Three Counties
29.04.2025
Illinois has committed $3.1 million to improve safety at nine rail crossings by installing automated lights and gates across Rock Island, Henry, and Bureau counties. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) set a completion deadline of October 24, 2026. State funds will cover 95% of design and construction, while Iowa Interstate Railroad pays the balance and future maintenance costs.

Illinois Moves to Modernize Rail Infrastructure
Officials said these upgrades are essential to reducing train-related accidents and improving safety in rural and urban zones. The improvements align with the state’s goal to enhance public transportation networks.
Michael Carrigan, ICC Commissioner, emphasized the project’s value: “Upgraded signals and gates protect lives and ensure Illinois residents can safely navigate railroad crossings.”
Illinois Targets High-Risk Crossings for Immediate Action
The ICC selected crossings based on traffic volume, visibility issues, and accident risk. Engineers will tailor each signal system to the specific conditions of its location for maximum safety impact.
Because of rising rail activity and aging infrastructure, residents and local authorities had called for stronger safety measures. Now, Illinois is acting to address those concerns with real solutions.
In the coming months, the ICC will coordinate with Iowa Interstate Railroad to finalize project timelines. Design work will begin soon, followed by phased construction.
These investments reaffirm Illinois’ long-term commitment to rail safety and proactive infrastructure renewal. As traffic grows, state officials are prioritizing lives and mobility through strategic planning.
