The Hyvinkää–Karjaa railway section has received official approval for service integration, allowing electric freight transport to begin. The first electric freight trains arrived at the Port of Hanko early on Monday, 3 February.

“Electric rail transport plays a crucial role in lowering logistics emissions and promoting sustainability. By electrifying this railway section, we have expanded our electric freight capacity, offering greener transport solutions,” stated Joni Lehtonen, Vice President, Commercial, VR Transpoint.

Electrification Strengthens Hyvinkää–Hanko Railway Logistics

Electric transport enhances logistics by removing the need to switch locomotives between diesel and electric power. Moving forward, VR will primarily use electric traction on this railway section, deploying advanced Vectron locomotives. Additionally, all electricity used by VR remains fossil-free.

The electrification also significantly boosts the service capacity of the Port of Hanko by improving rail accessibility for logistics companies. Customers benefit from smoother transport solutions and faster port operations.

“The Port of Hanko will experience notable improvements in efficiency and environmental impact due to railway electrification. This project aligns with EU environmental goals and the port’s sustainability strategy. We are well-positioned to enhance the supply chain from production plants to customers,” stated Anders Ahlvik, Managing Director, Port of Hanko Ltd.

VR continues to prioritize expanding electric traction within Finland’s railway network to improve sustainability in logistics. Increased rail electrification enables larger cargo loads with fewer trains, optimizing energy use and reducing emissions.

“Sustainable transportation investments are vital for maintaining Finland’s export industry competitiveness. The more goods we transport by rail, the more effectively we cut logistics-related emissions and reinforce environmental responsibility,” concluded Lehtonen.
