The FCAB railway company successfully conducted all necessary tests and trained staff to handle the new locomotive. It is also developing hydrogen production infrastructure, creating significant opportunities for eco-friendly rail systems.

Advantages of the Hydrogen Locomotive

The hydrogen locomotive will begin its operations in the port of Antofagasta, where green technology takes priority. By leading this project, FCAB becomes the first in South America to embrace hydrogen-powered rail.

The locomotive, delivered this summer after being ordered in late 2022, is highly efficient. It can transport 1,000 tons of cargo up to 400 kilometers, utilizing 400 kW hydrogen fuel cells.

Regional Impact and Future Prospects of the Hydrogen Locomotive

The project aligns with FCAB’s strategy to replace diesel locomotives with modern, sustainable alternatives. Currently, the company operates 83 diesel-powered units but plans to lead with innovative solutions.

The hydrogen locomotive, built for extreme conditions such as salt fog and sandstorms, ensures durability and performance. This eco-friendly technology significantly contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of the transportation sector.

Introducing hydrogen-powered rail systems boosts environmental conservation while supporting regional economic growth. Such innovations pave the way for a sustainable, forward-thinking future.
