The industrial action, organized by Aslef, began in March after a driver with a clean safety record was dismissed. The company claims it followed procedure, but the union insists the dismissal was unjustified.

Strike Reflects Broader Safety Culture Issues

Mick Whelan, general secretary of Aslef, said the company acted vindictively and punished the driver for fulfilling a safety obligation. He believes this action violates the core values of railway safety culture.

“This isn’t just about Hull Trains,” Whelan stressed. “Rail workers nationwide need the freedom to report safety concerns without fear of retaliation or losing their livelihood.”

Aslef argues the company’s refusal to address the issue respectfully poses risks far beyond its own operations. The union warns that trust across the entire network is at stake.

Strike Highlights Workers’ Right to Speak Out

Previous strikes caused delays and cancellations, frustrating passengers and drawing criticism. But union members insist they are standing up for a principle that affects all railway staff across the country.

Whelan emphasized that the campaign is not about disruption. Instead, it demands accountability and protection for employees committed to safe operations.

He added, “We will not stand down while companies silence those who speak out for safety. This strike continues because the right to report without fear must be upheld.”

Aslef intends to maintain pressure until Hull Trains reconsiders its actions and reinstates fair treatment. Meanwhile, the railway industry watches closely, aware that this case sets a powerful precedent.
