Major Investments to Enhance Hudson Bay Railway
Federal and Manitoba officials have announced substantial funding to support the Hudson Bay Railway. The Canadian government is providing $43M to maintain and operate this essential transportation route.

Transport Canada will distribute the funds through its Remote Passenger Rail program. This initiative ensures year-round access for 33,000 residents in Manitoba’s northern regions.
Additionally, Manitoba’s government has pledged $36.4M over two years for Arctic Gateway Group. This investment will enhance railway infrastructure and improve the Port of Churchill.
Officials say the funding will support AGG’s strategy to boost trade and attract private investments. Sectors like agriculture, mining, fertilizer, and resupply are expected to benefit significantly.
Hudson Bay Railway’s Role in Northern Trade and Development
Planned improvements include repairing the wharf and modernizing freight warehouse facilities. These upgrades will strengthen Churchill’s position as a key Arctic seaport in Canada.
AGG operates the Hudson Bay Railway, connecting The Pas to Churchill. The company is a subsidiary of OneNorth, a coalition of 41 First Nations and Bayline communities.
In August 2024, AGG collaborated with Hudbay Minerals Inc. on a zinc export project. A 10,000-tonne shipment marked Churchill’s emergence as a critical minerals trade hub.
Today’s investment builds on previous commitments to revitalize rail service in northern Manitoba. Since 2018, Canada has allocated $277M to the railway and related assets.
