The Canadian government has signed a $3.9 billion contract with the Cadence consortium to develop the first HSR in Canada. This was announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

HSR in Canada: Contract Details and Funding

The consortium includes Canadian companies CDPQ Infra and AtkinsRéalis, along with French partners Keolis, Systra, and SNCF Voyageurs. Air Canada and the Quebec Pension Fund are also participating in the project.

The Toronto-Montreal-Quebec line will be the largest infrastructure project in the country’s history. The first phase will receive $3.9 billion over six years, in addition to the previously allocated $371 million.

How HSR in Canada Will Transform the Transportation System?

The project will serve 18 million people—44% of the country’s population—contributing to 40% of GDP. Travel time between key cities will be cut in half, enhancing regional connectivity.

According to government estimates, the operation of the HSR will generate an additional $35 billion for the economy annually. Investments will help create jobs and strengthen the economy of the eastern regions.
