These new trains will replace the outdated MB400 and MB300 models from CAF, which were produced in the early 2010s.

The six-carriage trains, measuring 106 meters in length, will have a capacity of up to 1204 passengers and can reach speeds of 80 km/h.

One of the key improvements is a 10% reduction in energy consumption compared to existing trains, achieved through enhanced efficiency of the traction systems.

The use of aluminum in the construction will also reduce the train’s weight by 5%.

In late 2022, Hitachi Rail signed a framework contract with the Rome City Council worth €264 million.

The agreement includes the delivery of up to 30 new trains, with a firm order for 14 units. This includes 12 trains for Line B and two for Line A.

The first trains are expected to be delivered in December 2024, with the remainder arriving over the following year.

The new fleet is scheduled to enter service in 2025.
