The first four-car trainset was handed over to the city’s transportation authority, AMT, and will operate on the city’s only metro line, which stretches 7.1 km, this autumn.

The new trains have a length of 39 meters and can accommodate up to 290 passengers, with provisions for wheelchair spaces.

They can operate as standalone units or as part of larger trains with 8 cars.

Additionally, they are equipped with Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system.

This project became possible thanks to a €70 million loan provided to the Municipality of Genoa by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in 2020.

In 2021, a contract was signed with Hitachi Rail for the delivery of 14 metro trains.

It is expected that the remaining 13 trains will be delivered by spring 2025.

This new rolling stock will help replace outdated trains manufactured by the Italian company Breda in 1990, reducing the average age of the metro fleet from 18.5 years to 9.8 years.
