Metro Vancouver’s latest SkyTrain addition has entered service using Hitachi Rail technology, marking a new era of innovation and automation in the region’s expanding rapid transit network. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Hitachi Rail Delivers Advanced Canadian Technology
Hitachi Rail’s SelTrac CBTC system, developed in Canada, supports real-time train control, precise location monitoring, and efficient driverless operations. This technology allows for higher train frequency and improved service reliability across one of Canada’s busiest transit systems.
SelTrac has become a benchmark for automation globally. While serving Metro Vancouver’s network, it also operates in major cities like London, New York, Paris, and Dubai. Its evolution parallels SkyTrain’s development since the launch of the Expo Line in 1986.
For nearly 40 years, Hitachi Rail has collaborated with TransLink, beginning with the launch of one of the world’s first fully driverless train systems. That partnership continues to deliver upgrades and innovation tailored to Metro Vancouver’s unique transit needs.
Hitachi Rail Supports 10-Year Transit Expansion Vision
Metro Vancouver’s 10-Year Transportation Vision includes a 28% expansion in SkyTrain’s network. Projects such as the Broadway Subway and Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension will rely on Hitachi Rail’s proven CBTC technology to ensure scalability and long-term performance.
Ziad Rizk, Managing Director of Urban Rail Signalling at Hitachi Rail, emphasized the company’s commitment. He stated that Canadian-developed systems play a vital role in shaping the next chapter of public transit in the region.
“Our work with TransLink reflects our long-term investment in reliable, future-ready solutions,” Rizk said. “This milestone is another leap forward in transforming how Vancouver moves, connecting communities through advanced automation and collaboration.”
As Metro Vancouver grows, Hitachi Rail remains at the forefront, delivering trusted technology that enables smarter, safer, and more efficient urban transit.
