Under a new contract, Hitachi Rail is integrating a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system using 5G on the Crosstown Line in New York and at the high-speed metro station at Hong Kong Airport.

The introduction of 5G significantly improves metro capacity and reduces train maintenance costs through more efficient data transmission.

Hitachi’s SelTrack CBTC digital signaling system upgrades traditional communication methods based on Wi-Fi and radio by adding a 5G band, enabling instant information exchange between trains and the control center.

This not only enhances traffic management but also optimizes the maintenance processes of rolling stock in real time.

In the future, the new system will be able to transition to 6G without the need for a complete overhaul.

In addition to Hitachi, other companies are also implementing similar technologies.

In August 2024, Siemens introduced its Train2Cloud system with 5G support and driverless operation GoA4 CBTC, which will be showcased at InnoTrans 2024.

Huawei, in turn, announced in August 2023 the delivery of a 5G-based FRMCS communication system for the railways of Mozambique.

This confirms the rapid development and adoption of advanced 5G technologies in the railway sector, where digital solutions play a key role in ensuring safe and efficient train traffic management.
