13.01.2025
The Heritage Railway has completed major upgrades, improving infrastructure and workforce skills thanks to recent funding. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Vital Investments in Heritage Railway Infrastructure
The North Norfolk Railway secured £34,427 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund, enabling essential infrastructure improvements. Upgrades include new LED lighting at Weybourne Station’s workshops and the construction of a coal bunker and oil storage unit. These improvements create a safer, more efficient environment and reduce electricity costs.

Additionally, the railway’s second coal bunker stores smokeless solid fuel, blended with traditional coal to lower emissions. This initiative helps minimize environmental impact and reduces fire risks along the railway.
Workforce Training to Strengthen Heritage Railway Operations
A £5,000 grant from Future Skills NOW supported staff training in woodworking, chainsaw handling, and abrasive wheel machinery. This funding equips the team with critical skills for maintaining safety and efficiency in daily operations.
General Manager Graham Hukins expressed gratitude, stating, “These investments improve working conditions while addressing rising operational costs, which exceed £3.8 million annually.”
Celebrating 50 Years of Heritage Railway Steam Services
As 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of steam services from Sheringham Station, an exciting lineup of events is planned. Visitors can enjoy daily steam services, special events, and dining trains. Visit the North Norfolk Railway website for details on this historic celebration.
The Heritage Railway’s efforts, supported by the Rural England Prosperity Fund and Shared Prosperity Fund, demonstrate a commitment to preserving history while addressing modern challenges. These initiatives boost rural productivity and enhance the railway’s long-term sustainability.
