Hamilton-Oshawa Port Reports Record Growth and Seeks CBSA Approval
16.05.2025
The Hamilton-Oshawa Port closed 2024 with record revenue and is now pursuing Canada Border Services Agency approval to expand its inland customs processing capability. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Annual revenue at the Hamilton-Oshawa Port rose by 8%, reaching $46.9 million—up from $43.3 million in 2023. This boost came primarily from agricultural cargo, now accounting for 40% of total shipping volume.

The port also became home to Canada’s largest sugar refinery, enhancing its role in agri-food logistics and contributing significantly to its financial success.
Hamilton-Oshawa Port Seeks CBSA Green Light for Terminal
HOPA completed a new inland rail terminal, which is ready to begin container operations. However, it still requires CBSA approval for a sufferance warehouse to proceed with inland customs clearance.
CEO Ian Hamilton confirmed the application for an AR sufferance warehouse, which would allow bonded containers to arrive by rail from marine ports and be cleared in Hamilton.
Inland customs clearance would streamline trade, reduce ocean port congestion, and offer faster service to importers by moving inspections closer to final destinations.
Hamilton-Oshawa Port Prepares for Export Growth
The customs station would also enable Hamilton exporters to grow international shipments, particularly of steel and agricultural goods, strengthening the region’s global trade presence.
City officials have made CBSA approval a top lobbying priority as part of Hamilton’s broader tariff response and economic resilience plan.
Despite trade uncertainties driven by U.S. tariffs under Donald Trump’s policies, HOPA remains cautiously optimistic about 2025 and the potential for sustained growth.
By advancing inland logistics and securing customs capacity, the port positions itself as a resilient, efficient, and increasingly vital trade hub for Canada.
