The initiative entails launching a train within the framework of European ‘Paths of Solidarity’ to diversify trade links between Mediterranean ports and Ukraine.
In the initial pilot phase, the train will connect Greek ports in Alexandroupolis and Thessaloniki with ports in Ruse, Bulgaria, Constanta, Romania, as well as with Moldova and Ukraine.
This initiative aims to address economic challenges stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which have impacted supply chains and the energy security of several countries. Strengthening transportation links and international freight transport through this project can play a crucial role in diversifying trade relations among the participating countries.
Christos Staikouras’ initiative emphasizes the significance of diversity in trade relationships, especially in the face of geopolitical changes and challenges such as conflicts and crises.

If realized, this project could contribute to more reliable and efficient freight transportation between nations, ultimately strengthening their economic cooperation.
Furthermore, Greece’s proposal underscores the importance of collaboration and support among countries in addressing transportation and economic challenges.
In light of the agreement between Ukraine and Lithuania for the development of transportation connections, we see that countries are striving to enhance their transportation links and improve international trade through joint efforts.
These initiatives can serve as an example of how countries can cooperate to achieve common goals in the field of transportation and trade.
