The Bee Network’s expansion will include eight commuter rail lines, buses, and trams under unified control. Mayor Andy Burnham is urging Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander to support this ambitious initiative.

Why Greater Manchester Plans to Integrate Rail

Mayor Andy Burnham emphasized the benefits of integrating rail services into the Bee Network. He explained that local oversight would ensure more reliable services, better connectivity, and improved passenger satisfaction.

“This change will encourage more people to choose public transport over cars,” Burnham stated. “We’re committed to delivering a low-cost, high-patronage system that supports our region’s growth.”

Steps to Integrate Rail by 2028

The plan begins with contactless pay-as-you-go ticketing for routes between Glossop, Stalybridge, and Manchester by 2026. Remaining lines will follow by 2028. Accessibility upgrades, such as step-free access at Daisy Hill and Irlam stations, are also in progress.

The integration of rail services aims to improve reliability and reduce car dependency across Greater Manchester. Officials are confident this project will transform travel for residents while supporting environmental goals.
