Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national rail operator, hosted Global Rail, a premier event focused on the future of transportation. The conference brought together industry leaders, innovators, and experts to explore next-generation rail technologies.

One of the event’s key highlights was the Global Rail Innovation Award, which recognized three outstanding projects. The award aimed to foster innovation, enhance efficiency, and promote sustainable solutions within the rail sector. With over 75 international entries, ten finalists were shortlisted. A panel of industry experts at Etihad Rail evaluated the projects and announced the winners at the closing ceremony.
Winners of the Global Rail Innovation Award
The winning innovations centered on digital monitoring, real-time rail defect detection, and cutting-edge infrastructure management. The selected projects included:
• CEMIT: “Monitoring in Motion with CEMIT: Evolution Infrastructure Monitoring with Trains.”
• LTTS: “Innovative Way to Detect Visible Rail Defects in Real-Time.”
• SYSTRA: “Digital Twin for Railway Infrastructure.”
Each winning team received AED 500,000 to further develop their projects and test their solutions at Etihad Rail’s facilities. These funds will help bring their ideas to life, improving operational efficiency and enhancing rail safety.
His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail, highlighted the importance of government support in shaping the future of the rail sector. He emphasized the company’s dedication to advancing transformative railway technologies.
The winners expressed appreciation for the recognition and funding, stressing its impact on their research. Manuel Simon, Sales Director at CEMIT, shared that the award would help transform their concept into reality. Similarly, Étienne Pansart, Head of Digital Engineering at SYSTRA, underscored the funding’s role in accelerating sustainable rail innovation.
Alind Saxena, Executive Director at LTTS, highlighted how the competition provided a platform to showcase revolutionary transport solutions. He noted that participation strengthened global industry partnerships, fueling further advancements in mobility.
Beyond the awards, Global Rail 2024 featured an Innovation Hub, displaying pioneering transportation technologies. The hub served as a collaborative space where industry leaders exchanged ideas and explored groundbreaking advancements.
Looking toward 2025, Global Rail plans to expand its focus on innovation and industry collaboration. The event will continue serving as a launchpad for transformative mobility technologies, ensuring the railway sector remains at the forefront of global transportation advancements.
