Glasgow Subway enters driverless era with screen doors
05.08.2025
The Glasgow Subway is undergoing a major transformation as it installs platform screen doors to enable driverless train operations by 2026, a first for the UK transit network. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Glasgow Subway prepares for fully automated service
The Glasgow Subway is modernizing its 130-year-old infrastructure with a £288 million overhaul. This includes new trains, upgraded signalling, and the introduction of driverless operations.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) confirmed that sliding platform screen doors—similar to those on the Jubilee Line—will begin installation soon. These doors will open in sync with the train, ensuring greater safety and enabling unattended train operation (UTO).
Work will start at Govan station, followed by Ibrox and Partick, and eventually the rest of the 6.5-mile loop. By March 2026, the new signalling and control system will be operational, allowing trains to run without onboard staff by July.
Unlike London’s Docklands Light Railway, which still has onboard staff, the Glasgow Subway will run autonomously. However, SPT will keep staff at stations and onboard during peak times and special events.
Glasgow Subway platform upgrades near completion
The first doors will be installed in open mode, allowing passengers to familiarize themselves with the new boarding process. Full synchronization with trains is expected in early 2026, once the control center goes live.
SPT has reinforced all platforms and selected half-height doors over full enclosures to maintain an open feel on narrow platforms. Once UTO begins, the Subway will gradually remove driver cabs, adding more seats and panoramic views through the front and rear windows.
SPT emphasized its commitment to safety and accessibility. Staff will remain present where needed to support passengers and operations. The modernization, originally launched in 2011, is now entering its final phases.
Labour MSP Paul Sweeney praised the long-awaited upgrade, calling it one of Scotland’s most ambitious rail infrastructure projects. Glasgow will soon become the first UK city to operate a fully unattended metro system.
