Alstom achieved a major milestone in the Santiago Metro Line 7 project by completing the first Metropolis train carbody at its Taubaté facility in São Paulo, Brazil, marking a significant step toward modern urban mobility. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Metropolis train features stainless steel construction, offering durability and energy efficiency with a lifespan exceeding 40 years. Each 102-meter train can transport up to 1,250 passengers, ensuring high capacity for the growing demand in Santiago.

Metropolis Design Enhances Comfort and Safety

Alstom prioritized passenger experience in the Metropolis design. Wide doors on both sides allow faster boarding, while spacious corridors and open gangways provide seamless movement between cars. Travelers will enjoy air conditioning, USB charging points, and an advanced passenger information system for real-time updates.

Safety remains a top priority. Each train includes high-resolution cameras, intercoms for emergency communication, and a cybersecurity network to protect operational systems and passenger data.

Metropolis Contract and Network Impact

In 2022, Santiago Metro awarded Alstom a contract to deliver 37 five-car trains and provide 20 years of predictive maintenance for rolling stock, tracks, and catenary systems. The deal also includes the Urbalis CBTC signaling solution to boost efficiency and reduce headways.

Line 7 spans 26 km with 19 stations, crossing seven districts—three of which will connect to the metro network for the first time. This extension will serve about 1.4 million people and dramatically improve urban mobility.

Once operational, the line will cut travel time between its two terminal stations to 37 minutes from the current 80-minute bus trip—a 54% reduction. This improvement highlights the transformative role of modern rail systems in building sustainable and efficient cities.

Alstom’s achievement with the Metropolis train underlines its commitment to innovation and its strategic role in shaping Santiago’s future transportation landscape.
