Ghana’s Transport Minister Demands Urgent Action on Rail Destruction
Ghana’s railway network is facing mounting destruction from unchecked illegal mining and land encroachment. If left unresolved, these issues will continue disrupting transportation, affecting both passenger services and cargo logistics.
The Accra-Nsawam shuttle service remains suspended after widespread track removals and unauthorized land occupations. Meanwhile, the Accra-Tema service operates inefficiently, generating minimal revenue and causing severe salary payment delays.
Minister Nikpe confirmed the railway sector’s inability to generate enough income, leaving workers unpaid for five months. He assured the public that discussions with the Ministry of Finance aim to resolve the financial crisis.
Ghana Railways Development Authority Outlines Recovery Plans
Illegal mining near railway tracks in the Western Region has significantly worsened operational setbacks. Minister Nikpe stressed that immediate government intervention is crucial to prevent further destruction and service disruptions.
Many contractors responsible for railway projects have abandoned sites due to ongoing encroachment and financial difficulties. The government plans coordinated efforts to reclaim occupied lands and resume construction.
Ghana Railways Development Authority CEO, Dr. Frederick Appoh, announced strategic efforts to revitalize the sector. He emphasized the importance of restoring operations to boost national transportation and economic stability.
Dr. Appoh highlighted that the Tema-Mpakadan rail project is 99% complete and will enhance passenger and cargo transport. This key railway link will connect Ghana’s port city to Mpakadan, improving freight logistics.
The $500 million project requires full utilization to justify its massive investment. Authorities are determined to optimize railway services and ensure the sector’s long-term financial sustainability.
Government officials remain committed to solving railway challenges through strategic interventions. Restoring efficient operations will improve Ghana’s transportation system and strengthen the nation’s economic growth.
