21.11.2023
Berlin authorities have unveiled plans for a groundbreaking 30 km railway tunnel through the Ore Mountains along the German-Czech border, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Deutsche Bahn, the state-owned railway company, has chosen a single tunnel as the optimal solution for economic, environmental, and technical reasons.

Connecting Heidenau (Germany) and Usti nad Labem (Czech Republic), the project is crucial for European infrastructure.
With current Elbe river valley railways near capacity and susceptible to flooding, the tunnel offers a strategic alternative.
Construction is slated for 2032, taking approximately 12 years.
Once operational, the tunnel will significantly cut travel time between Prague and Dresden, transforming rail connectivity across Europe.
