Germany plans to invest €106.5 billion in its railway infrastructure by 2029, exceeding past total transport spending and signaling a major shift toward sustainable mobility and economic modernization. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Germany prioritizes rail with record infrastructure funding
Germany will allocate the largest portion of its €166 billion infrastructure package to rail, with €106.5 billion dedicated to upgrading aging tracks, stations, and signaling systems by 2029.

The federal government’s strategy places rail at the center of a sustainable transport push. In comparison, roads will receive €51.9 billion, and waterways are set to get €7.6 billion over the same period.
Germany aligns transport renewal with climate and economic goals
In March, Germany amended its constitution to enable up to €500 billion in extra borrowing for defense, climate initiatives, and infrastructure renewal, supporting long-term national resilience.
This investment in rail supports lower carbon emissions, better logistics efficiency, and higher rail usage for passengers and freight, reinforcing Germany’s climate commitments and economic competitiveness.
Germany’s transport system has struggled with delays, capacity issues, and outdated infrastructure. But this initiative aims to reverse those trends with significant upgrades and long-term digital modernization.
So, Germany’s rail sector is positioned for major transformation. With strong financial backing and strategic priorities in place, the country moves toward a cleaner, faster, and more efficient mobility future.
