The facility operates entirely on electricity and is designed to support electric shunting locomotives and forklifts, reducing carbon emissions.
Located alongside the East Coast Main Line covering over 300 km, it is expected to handle around 80 intermodal movements per day by 2025. This will significantly enhance safety and reliability, enabling existing and future customers to transport a wider range of goods by rail.
GBRf’s Managing Director, John Smith, emphasized that this will help customers decarbonize their supply chains.
According to GBRf, the hub will be a strategic element that will bring about ‘gradual changes’ in rail freight service by analyzing four wagons for each shift.

The company stated that with the advent of new smart technologies, the hub will serve as a testing ground to identify creative solutions and enhance innovation.
GBRf claims that the average freight train emits 74% less CO2 than road transport for every tonne of goods carried, aligning with the company’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The transport company maintains a presence throughout the UK, currently servicing over 2,000 trains per week, moving 22% of the total UK rail freight.
