The USDOT has allocated $250M to Honolulu’s Skyline rail project, marking a major milestone. This funding ensures progress and expansion for Hawaii’s largest public transit system. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Skyline Rail Project Milestones Unlocked
The Skyline rail system, initially funded under a $1.55B agreement in 2012, continues advancing. February marked the release of $125M, followed by $250M for recent contract completions.

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) finalized the City Center Guideway and Stations contract. This funding secures resources for construction within Honolulu’s urban center, ensuring timely delivery.
USDOT’s Support Strengthens Honolulu’s Transit Network
To date, federal contributions for the Skyline rail project have surpassed $1.1B. Additional disbursements of $364M are expected, tied to project milestones outlined in the amended agreement.
Skyline operations began in June 2023 with an 11-mile stretch between East Kapolei and Aloha Stadium. The next phase, connecting Aloha Stadium to the Middle Street Transit Center, is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.
This expanded funding reaffirms the USDOT’s commitment to sustainable urban transit. The Skyline project enhances travel options, reduces traffic, and drives Honolulu’s growth as a modern city.
Sen. Brian Schatz praised the collaboration between HART and USDOT, highlighting progress. “This funding is proof of Honolulu’s dedication to efficient and sustainable transit systems,” Schatz stated.
