Northern Introduces Fuel-Saving Innovations for Diesel Trains. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Northern has introduced a new model that optimizes train operations to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This development could cut fuel usage by up to 7%. Tests are being conducted on key routes in the northeastern part of the country.

In collaboration with Chrome Angel Solutions and auticon, Northern has implemented data-driven technology to optimize train speed and braking. This allows train drivers to adopt a more fuel-efficient driving style without compromising service quality. A test on the Middlesbrough to Whitby route showed a 7% reduction in fuel consumption, which equates to a decrease in carbon emissions.
The company spends around £50 million annually on fuel. Northern plans to expand testing across six key routes to assess the impact and potentially implement the model on a wider scale. Rob Warnes, Northern’s Director of Strategic Development, highlighted the significance of this initiative. He emphasized that Northern is working towards phasing out diesel trains by 2040, but with only 25% of the network electrified, it is crucial to operate diesel trains as efficiently as possible.
This project, which has been in development for a year, has already shown promising results, allowing the company to move forward with further testing. It is part of Northern’s broader commitment to decarbonization, supported by the Northern Innovation Fund and the UK Department for Transport’s TRIG program.
Northern sees both environmental and financial benefits in this initiative. The implementation of new technologies helps the rail industry achieve its goal of reducing carbon emissions.
