24.04.2025
France rail strikes May 2025 are set to disrupt national travel plans and delay major investments in critical railway infrastructure. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The CGT-Cheminots union will launch an indefinite strike on May 5, while Sud-Rail will stage walkouts on May 7, 9, 10, and 11. These dates coincide with France’s May 8 holiday weekend, one of the year’s busiest travel periods.

France Rail Strikes May 2025 to Cost Millions Daily
Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete stated that each strike day will result in €10 million ($10.7 million) in lost infrastructure investment. He warned that such disruptions weaken long-term development plans.
He urged union leaders to reflect on the consequences of repeated actions, emphasizing their responsibility to both workers and the public.
“Protecting the system means ensuring it functions,” Vergriete said. “Frequent strikes do more harm than good in the long run.”
Government Urges Dialogue Amid France Rail Strikes May 2025
Vergriete encouraged social dialogue and called for a return to constructive negotiations. He said effective talks require willingness from all parties to de-escalate tensions.
He avoided direct intervention, believing it could reduce the state’s credibility in labor matters. However, he stressed the need for open communication to resolve disputes.
Unions argue that current working conditions are unsustainable. They demand fair pay increases and stronger workplace protections for railway staff.
Public opinion remains split. Many support the workers’ demands, but others grow frustrated with the repeated service interruptions, especially during key travel seasons.
With May approaching, pressure is mounting to find a resolution. The outcome of the France rail strikes May 2025 could set the tone for labor relations in the months ahead.
