FirstGroup Secures Place in S&P’s 2025 Sustainability Yearbook

FirstGroup remains the only UK transport operator included in S&P’s 2025 Sustainability Yearbook. The company ranks in the top 90% of 7,600 assessed firms globally. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

FirstGroup’s Environmental and Sustainability Achievements
S&P evaluated 7,600 companies across 60 industries in its Corporate Sustainability Assessment. To qualify, businesses had to rank in their industry’s top 15% and score within 30% of the highest-performing firm.

The company excelled in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) criteria. A strong commitment to sustainability and emissions reduction secured its competitive position.
Emissions reduction remains a priority, as FirstGroup continues progress toward its 2035 decarbonisation target. The firm has electrified three depots in England, with five more nearing substantial completion.
Rail subsidiaries Avanti, SWR, GWR, Hull Trains, and Lumo have advanced their sustainability efforts. Avanti introduced a £350M electric and bi-mode train fleet, while GWR tested fast-charge battery trains.
FirstGroup’s Commitment to Workforce Development
FirstGroup prioritises workforce diversity, training, and wage enhancements to support employees. First Bus pledged to double female representation by 2028 and secured Living Wage Employer status.
With 800 apprentices and 500 employees in leadership programs, the company fosters career development. CEO Graham Sutherland reaffirmed FirstGroup’s dedication to sustainability and greener transport solutions.
