First private depot in France to boost market competition
15.08.2025
In the commune of Marcheprime in southwestern France, construction has begun on the first private depot for servicing passenger trains and locomotives, aiming to strengthen competition and improve the efficiency of the Tours–Bordeaux rail corridor. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

LISEA, the operator of the Sud Europe Atlantique high-speed line, is investing $218 million of its own funds into the project. Currently, less than 50% of the line’s capacity is in use, and the shortage of maintenance facilities limits the growth of private rail services.

Depot construction and key specifications
The new center will occupy a 14-hectare site located 20 km from Bordeaux. Its workshops, covering a total area of 28,000 m², will handle maintenance for up to 40 trains of various types, including high-speed, regional, and intercity services, as well as work train locomotives.
Construction is being carried out by Colas, while SNCF Réseau will provide the connection to the national rail network. This facility will significantly reduce train downtime and enhance rolling stock servicing quality.
Market outlook and first depot clients
The opening is scheduled for 2028. The first user will be the private operator Proxima, which in 2024 ordered 12 double-deck high-speed Avelia Horizon trains from Alstom for the Velvet brand.
The project will ensure equal access to service facilities for all operators, which is particularly important for independent companies in a market dominated by SNCF Voyageurs. According to industry experts, this depot will stimulate competition and raise service standards on France’s railways.
The LISEA initiative is not just another infrastructure project but a strategic step toward a more open market. It will help maximize the use of the Sud Europe Atlantique high-speed line and expand passenger service coverage.
